Beliefs

The Gateway Church is a non-denominational church that holds to the authority of the Christian Scriptures for our life, love, and practice.

We believe these essential & orthodox beliefs are best expressed in the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. These historic creeds connect us with the long history of Christian faith, and we join with centuries of Christians in affirming these historically orthodox beliefs.

  • God

We believe in one triune God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – coeternal in being, coeternal in nature, coequal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfections (Deut. 6:4; 2 Cor. 13:14).

  • Jesus

We believe that Jesus is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15) and the perfect reflection of God’s heart, character, beauty and love (Hebrews 1:1-3, Romans 1:19-21). Jesus doesn’t merely reveal part of what God is like. Rather, the fullness of God is in Christ and revealed through Christ (Colossians 1:19; 2:9). As Jesus himself tells us, when we see him, we see the very character of the Father (John 14:7-9). From his incarnation, to his ministry, death and resurrection, Jesus reveals the truth that God’s nature is other-oriented, non-violent, self-sacrificial love.

  • Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit draws sinners to Christ and equips believers for personal growth and service to His Church, transforming us into the image of Jesus Christ (John 16:5-15; Romans 8; 1 Corinthians 12). The Holy Spirit works in our lives to teach us, convict us, speak to us and empower us so that we may reflect God’s character in our daily lives (John 14:26, Galatians 5:22-23).

  • Scripture

We believe that the entire Bible is “God-breathed” (theopneustos, 2 Tim 3:16) for the ultimate purpose of bearing witness to Christ (Jn 5:39-45), and especially to his sacrificial suffering on the cross (Lk 24:25-7, 44-6). Because the crucified Christ is the quintessential revelation of God, we read Scripture through the lens of the cross. Together the Scriptures form a complete story which moves from first creation to new creation all fitting together in a way that none of the authors could have seen but which we, standing back from the finished product, can only marvel at.

  • Humanity

We believe that all humanity is fearfully and wonderfully made, created in the image of God and designed to live in loving relationship with God (Genesis 1:26-27, Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:5). Woven into our being is a desire and longing to connect with our Creator, but humanity has fallen into sin and evil and become separated from God. As a result, we need God’s saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God’s grace - not human effort - and is received personally by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

  • The Church

The church is the corporate body of all who have placed their trust in Jesus and surrendered their lives to Christ. The Church is a global and local expression of living out the way of Jesus through love, peace, sacrifice, and healing as we embody the resurrected Christ, who lives in and through us, to a broken and hurting world. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, 2:1-47, Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:11-13, 5:25-30, 1 Corinthians 12:27).

  • The renewal of all things

We believe that the day is coming when Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly, in power and glory, to consummate his salvation and his judgment, bringing an end to injustice and restoring all things to God’s original intent (I Thes. 4:13-18; Zech. 14:4-11; Rev. 19:11-16, 20:1-6; I Thes. 1:10, 5:9; Rev. 3:10; Matt. 25:46; 2 Peter 3:13; Rev. 20:11-15; Rev. 21-22).

  • Belief and community

The best way to understand what we believe is to come and be a part of our community. You don’t have to hold these beliefs to experience a sense of belonging. We seek to humbly express our beliefs through our words and actions, while welcoming everyone, regardless of their beliefs, to join us.

Creeds

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
The third day He arose again.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;  and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
