Living Letters
This sermon series is riffing on 2 Corinthians 3. In verses 2-3, the Apostle Paul writes, “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are Christ’s letter, delivered by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God—not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” We want to explore how Christ is "writing" to the world through our lives and hearts. We'll do this by recounting stories of faith that unfold in the lives of ordinary individuals. We seek to demonstrate how God's faithfulness transcends circumstances and continually authors a tale of grace and goodness.
Each sermon will zoom in on the life of at least one person who beautifully displays Christ's love—someone with a compelling life story. The goal isn't to study the most famous person or those with the most significant numerical reach. We want to learn from those faithful in ways large and small. We will examine the lives of Church Age extrabiblical Christians—historical figures or ordinary people still alive today.
How has God revealed himself through the life of this individual? What is one virtue that made them special? Explore this virtue through at least one primary passage of scripture and highlight how God prompts us to learn from their lives. How do we see God's character in this? What is God inviting us into here?
The goal is to be reminded of why we can place our complete confidence in God as the author of our lives. He is telling a beautiful story of redemption through our lives and community. As Paul states in 2 Corinthians 3:5-6a, “It is not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God. He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit.“
