Pain in Tension
Group Discussion Guide
Each Sunday we come together we offer an open invitation into the way of Jesus. An invitation to enter into sacred rhythms - to draw near to God through singing, giving, learning, and praying.
As a community who desires renewal in Des Moines as it is in Heaven, we recognize that we cannot offer what we ourselves do not have. We cannot lead where we ourselves have not been led; in turn, these questions aim at reflection. Reflecting on God’s word and making space for his leadership.
After watching or listening consider the following discussion questions as a large group or in groups of three to four:
What stood out to you about this week’s teaching?
What connected with you in this teaching?
How have you historically responded to suffering (personally and otherwise)?
Apathy? Compassion? Anger?
How can pain be a pathway in our formation (out of the image of the world and into the image of Jesus)?
When our hidden sin - or unknown truth - is exposed defensiveness often follows. How can we move from self-preservation & self-protection to trust?
If indeed Peter is John Mark’s eyewitness source, what do you make of Peter’s willingness to present himself as we find him in this scene?
What lie and/or allegation of the enemy of our souls do you need to tell to get behind you in the name of Jesus? (If this feels like a reach, or too risky to share, consider journaling about how that lie is false and how Jesus’ forgiveness is stronger.)
