Self-Control

Group Discussion Guide

Each Sunday we come together we offer an open invitation into the way of Jesus. An invitation to enter into sacred rhythms - to draw near to God through singing, giving, learning, and praying.

As a community who desires renewal in Des Moines as it is in Heaven, we recognize that we cannot offer what we ourselves do not have. We cannot lead where we ourselves have not been led; in turn, these questions aim at reflection. Reflecting on God’s word and making space for his leadership.

After watching or listening consider the following discussion questions as a large group or in groups of three to four:

  • What stood out to you from this week’s teaching?

  • Check out this quote from the teaching: “It is hard to admit that we are profoundly habituated to a self-referenced way of being in the world that manifests itself in characteristics such as being fearful, protective, possessive, manipulative, destructive, self-promoting, indulgent, and making distinctions so as to separate ourselves from others...The false self is the self that in some way is playing God in its life and in its world.”- Dr. M. Robert Mulholland, Jr.

    • What characteristic of the false self reminds you of yourself?

  • How have your views of self-control shifted in light of Matthew 16?

  • What is the difference between self-control with & without the Spirit’s power?

  • What might it look like for us to be a community formed by self-control?
