What Matters to Jesus

Group Discussion Guide

Each Sunday we come together we offer an open invitation into the way of Jesus. An invitation to enter into sacred rhythms - to draw near to God through singing, giving, learning, and praying.

As a community who desires renewal in Des Moines as it is in Heaven, we recognize that we cannot offer what we ourselves do not have. We cannot lead where we ourselves have not been led; in turn, these questions aim at reflection. Reflecting on God’s word and making space for his leadership.

After watching or listening consider the following discussion questions as a large group or in groups of three to four:

What stood out to you about this week’s teaching?

  • What was most challenging?

  • What was most encouraging?

  • In the first vignette, it says the crowd heard Jesus gladly. They were eager to hear what Jesus had to say. Would you say you are actively listening in your day-to-day life to what Jesus has to say to you?

    • If yes, how so?

    • If no, what is keeping you from listening?

  • Do you identify more with the “unpopular” people Jesus chose to hang out with or the scribes/Pharisees/religious leaders? Or a little bit of both?

    • Have there been times in your life when you’ve sought a “seat on honor”? A time when you sought importance or status?

      • If so, how did you fight against that?

  • Have you ever struggled with giving sacrificially?

    • If so, was it money, time, care, love, grace, forgiveness, or something else?

    • What ways have you found that help you have a mindset like the widow - one that leans toward giving all of yourself?

  • What would your response be to the questions at the end of today’s teaching?

    • What have you laid down?

    • Is there something God is asking you to lay down that you’ve been clinging to?

    • What are you willing to lay down today, so you can open your hands and let Him lead you to where He is going?
