The Great Commandment
Group Discussion Guide
Each Sunday we come together we offer an open invitation into the way of Jesus. An invitation to enter into sacred rhythms - to draw near to God through singing, giving, learning, and praying.
As a community who desires renewal in Des Moines as it is in Heaven, we recognize that we cannot offer what we ourselves do not have. We cannot lead where we ourselves have not been led; in turn, these questions aim at reflection. Reflecting on God’s word and making space for his leadership.
After watching or listening consider the following discussion questions as a large group or in groups of three to four:
What stood out to you about this week’s teaching?
In your family, work, or group of friends what topics tend to spark the loudest arguments? Why is that?
What makes the conversation in Mark 12:28-34 so intriguing? Or is it for you? What made it intriguing to the people who first heard it?
How was the scribe’s attitude different from those who asked questions in the previous two chapters?
Why do you suppose Jesus called these two commandments the greatest?
Jesus’ response silenced the crowd. What do you think they were thinking but wouldn’t say?
In the three possible love relationships (with God, neighbors, and self) where are you the strongest? The weakest? What have you found that helps you grow in each area?
