Looking Beneath the Surface

Group Discussion Guide

Each Sunday we come together we offer an open invitation into the way of Jesus. An invitation to enter into sacred rhythms - to draw near to God through singing, giving, learning, and praying.

As a community who desires renewal in Des Moines as it is in Heaven, we recognize that we cannot offer what we ourselves do not have. We cannot lead where we ourselves have not been led; in turn, these questions aim at reflection. Reflecting on God’s word and making space for his leadership.

After watching or listening consider the following discussion questions as a large group or in groups of three to four:

  • What stood out to you in this week’s teaching?

  • [This is a carry over question related to last week's teaching.] What are the implications of emotional health? How does it help us in the other aspects of life (social, physical, intellectual, spiritual)?

  • If emotional health is, “our capacity to notice, name, and attend to in love what’s going on in and around us.” How would you assess your emotional health (1 being poor 5 being Jesus)?

  • [Withholding judgment of yourself and others consider the following:] What ‘beneath-the-surface’ emotions can dismantle transformation into Christlikeness (generally); and, what do you notice standing in the way of your own transformation?

    • If stuck, consider the teaching text in Mark 7:18-23

  • What can stand in the way of awareness in our lives?

  • Consider reading Psalm 139 aloud as a community to close.
